Pet Insurance By: Debbie Foster
It is a strange fact that most pet owners do not bother obtaining an insurance plan for their pets even though the numbers of households that have pets are in the tens of millions. This statistic is even more peculiar when we consider insurance very high on our priority list with cars, homes, boats and health insurance extremely important to the average American.
Although it may at first sound like a frivolous expense at first, vets bills are costly and it doesn't take much treatment for them to enter into four figure bills. Just as with private medical insurance, vets costs have risen sharply in the last ten years and a recent trip to the vets to treat my dog after an auto accident proved this with almost twelve hundred dollars to pay.
If rising costs of pet insurance are not enough to convince you, there are others to consider. The realistic fact is that the more pets you own, the greater the risk that one of them will be involved in an accident or become sick and trust me when I say that this invariably happens at the worst time, financially.
The last thing you want to think about is money when you need your pet to have urgent treatment. This situation happened to me when I was informed that I was looking at around one thousand dollars to save my dog and all I could think about at the time was whether he was worth the cost, awful isn't it? Especially when you know that even with the surgery and treatments, my dog could still die from complications but fortunately it all turned out well and my dog is happy and healthy today.
The decision to have our dog treated was a huge financial risk mainly because we were having other money worries at the time. Our money worries had started about a month prior to this accident when I had been laid off after ten years with the company so we were financially extended and if it wasn't for my brother coming to the rescue, I don't know how we would have managed the bill.
You can guarantee, if you have money worries then you either won't pay for the treatment or only give just what is needed and not necessarily the best; something that pet insurance guarantees won't happen. Pet insurance will not cost the earth and insurance plans can be purchased from anywhere between twenty to forty dollars a month which could save a fortune against the cost of vet bills.
Some pet insurance policies have a facility to incorporate more than one pet on the same plan but nearly all can be tailor-made to suit your circumstances. If you are a pet owner then with a bit of luck this information will have convinced you of the importance of getting your pet insured.
