Summer is here and temperatures are high! It’s important to remember that your pets need protection from the heat just like we humans do.
Many people don’t realize that their pets can suffer from the same type of ailments as they do when overexposed to the sun. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, premature aging and sunburn, just to name a few, can happen to both species. That’s why it’s important for we humans to take precautions against the sun’s UV rays for our pets, as well as for ourselves.
Some pretty simple steps can be taken to accomplish this.
Just like us, pets should have sunscreen on their nose and ears when out in the sun. This is especially true during the hottest hours of the day between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Sunscreen should be veterinarian approved and applied to any exposed or sensitive areas.
Plenty of water should always be available, as well as access to shade and preferably, access to air conditioning.
Exercise or play with your pet outside only in the hours before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. when it’s cooler. Be sure to play or walk where there is grass because asphalt and concrete can be very hot and burn your pet’s feet.
Groom your pet regularly, especially if it has long hair. Removing loose hair can help cool your pet down, and if you own a cat, you can help to reduce the upchucking of hairballs.
If your pet is elderly or overweight, let it stay in the air conditioning. Pets with medical problems are more at risk.
Never leave your pet in your car. Cracking the windows or parking in the shade won’t prevent the temperature in your car from rising to over one hundred degrees in a matter of minutes.
Being responsible and taking care of your pet in the same fashion as you’d like to be treated will ensure their comfort and safety.
