Curing Hangovers By: Scott Morgan
Often, it is the fact that individuals believe that hangover cures actually work that encourages them to drink far more than they should. The number of cures available just makes you realize what a huge market there is for them. Dehydration is the biggest problem to overcome but there are other problems that alcohol poisoning has caused.
As most people who drink will attest: some drinks give you worse hangovers than others and this is caused by impurity of the drink itself. How bad your hangover is will also depend on the concentration levels of these impurities which also help determine how quickly you will become drunk. For instance the clear spirits (vodka, gin etc) have less impurities than the colored ones (whisky and cognac) as they have been filtered.
However, the real reason we have hangovers and strive for perfect hangover cures is because we simply drink too much. This is often the case when we drink quickly or perhaps on an empty stomach, but at the end of the day, no one makes us do this. Most regular drinkers are aware that if you drink slowly, even if it is continued, the body is able to process the alcohol before it gets to a level where we get drunk. However, most drinkers, the majority of which are young do not adhere to these simple rules and almost always require some type of hangover cure. Some of these are quite ludicrous and now, talking about hangover cures has become a common topic in bars around the world. Nevertheless, the best cure for a hangover is still something that many people are searching for.
Left unchecked, it doesn't matter how much you drink, alcohol will gradually dehydrate the body and this dehydration can lead to the hangover headache the next day. Knowing this, it should be really easy to avoid a hangover by just ensuring your body is re-hydrated before you go to sleep, but how many of us actually do this. Some swear by drinking a pint of water before sleep as well as taking a couple of headache tablets and drinking a glass of orange juice in the morning as it puts back some of the lost vitamin C. Although this actually works quite well, generally speaking, hangover cures becomes less effective as you age when often nothing works except time.
Eating bananas which contain large amounts of fructose, and potassium, pass as a credible hangover cure because these are two things the body loses when you drink. Bananas also contain magnesium, good for the headache caused by pounding blood vessels and a natural antacid to help with the nausea.
As hangover cures go, some people swear by having a ‘hair of the dog' which is normally a Bloody Mary with a few extra ingredients thrown in for good measure, however, just the very thought of drinking more alcohol when you are suffering from a hangover is usually enough to put some people off. Learning to say 'thanks but no thanks' could save you years of unnecessary suffering and frustration looking for a hangover cure that works every time!
