Kaduna To Host 2009 Mobil Championship By: Sanni Azeez
The newly inaugurated board of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has fixed July 23-25 for the 20th AFN/NNPC/EXXONMOBIL track and field championships slated to hold at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
Also, a ten-man task force headed by honourary president of the AFN, Governor Gabriel Suswam has been appointed to organise the Abuja Grand Prix scheduled for July 17.
Speaing shortly after the federation’s maiden board meeting presided over by Gov Suswam, AFN President Chief Solomon Ogba said that the Task Force “Is expected to organise the best ever race to ensure that Nigeria gets moved on IAAF’s calendar.
“We have appointed a committee for the Abuja Grand Prix Our honourary president Governor Suswam is the chairman of that body and we expect everyone in the athletics family to be proud of what they will witness come July 17,” observed the former Delta State sports commissioner.
Other members of the task force include; Alh. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau (vice chairman), Dr Godfrey Ogu, Navy Captain Omatseye Nesiama, Ms Rosa Collins, Mr Deji Tinubu, Ms Pat Itanyi, Mr Victor Onogagamue, CSP Sunday Bada, and Mrs Maria Wophill (events manager/SG,AFN).
While the federation board approved June 26th as date for the Ladi Lawal Athletic Classics slated to hold at the University of Lagos Sports Complex, the Nkoyo Ibori Classics at the Oghara Township Stadium also got a July 11 date. Some of the other decisions reached at the AFN board meeting include the appointment of Ms Pat Itanyi as Liaison Officer of the federation in the USA while ThisDay’s track and
field writer Duro Ikhazuagbe becomes the new media officer. The names of ten sub committee members tabled before the board were also approved.
