Extra Long Suits
“Big Fish”
One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. “Big Fish” is a story about Will Bloom, as he was called from Paris by his mom to tell him about his dying father. He went back home with his new wife to check on his stranger-for-a-father (as he had never understood him well) who was very fond of telling stories.
Edward Bloom, Will’s father was an amazing man whom everyone would love to watch for. Though the movie was shown year 2003, I have never grown tired of it. The story progresses more when Edward starts doing what he knows best—telling stories—to Will’s wife who was has grown very fond of him. This trait about Edward was the reason that Will has grown apart from his father—never knowing whether his father’s stories were real or has shifted to fantasy.
The stories were about Edward’s life (the young Edward was played by Ewan McGreggor). His tales starts with his encounter with the giant fish, his giant for a friend (that was good costumes since he has to wear
extra long suits), a so-called witch (Helena Bonham Carter by the way), the conjoined-Chinese twins, the circus, his wife and the time Will was born.
Setting apart reality from fantasy was hard for Will to take but in the end it was he who became the story teller. The last part—Ed Bloom’s funeral—was something though. It’s as if the interwoven paths of the person’s in Edward’s stories were actually real and not so real at the same time (especially the giant who seems to will not be in needing any extra long suits since he’s shorter than was told). All in all it’s a great film for those who enjoy good stories. I’d sure take another look later….
