Usually what this means, however, is traveling to another country so that you are not able to simply switch back to your own language when it is convenient. There are many people who claim that immersing themselves in the new language made them learn it faster than they could have any other way. Other people find it intimidating. So you'll have to made the decision whether you'd be comfortable immersing yourself in this way.

Work on improving your "ear" for the language. Some languages have more of an oral-emphasized than written. In fact, as long as the language is still "alive" you will have to learn how to hear the language. Correctly reciting the alphabet or composing a sentence will only take you a certain distance. Of course you'll still have to understand what is being spoken to you. The best results will come from listening to the language whenever possible. You will know you're on the right track when you can identify your language after hearing a few spoken words.

Keep in mind that perfection comes from practice. Be sure to always talk in your language as often as you can, and don't be concerned about how it looks, or sounds. You can help remember words by using them in place of the words in your native language. As an example when learning Spanish, substitute 'uno' for 'one' and 'cena' for 'dinner.' If you practice this, the new language words will feel quite natural for you. Then you'll understand the words when you hear them spoken. This technique will really help you understand your new language when you talk to others who are fluent in it.
