Charity Worker - David Stitt By: Artni_web_design
CO DOWN strongman David Stitt has been hauling, running, biking and lifting for charity over 24 years now, but he's showing no signs of tiring.
The 35 year-year-old Newtownards man did a sponsored cycle when he was 11 and has been hooked on the fundraising bug ever since.
And this summer he's planning to push his limits once again for a good cause, this time in aid of RAMS, the multiple sclerosis charity.
The bodybuilder may well cause some congestion in Lisburn on June 10 as he attempts to pull a car through the city centre. Meanwhile, in July, its pilots who should be on the outlook, as David switches his sights to hauling a vintage aeroplane down Newtownards airport run way.
"I've visited the Rams centre and have seen people being treated," said David, whose charity ventures are sponsored by Charles Hurst, Bridgedale and Razor energy drink. "There was a wee three-year-old girl there with Down's Syndrome and MS it really makes you think how lucky you are, it really touched me.
"Some people just don't accept how good life is and grumble a lot. When you see people like that, suffering, it just inspires me to go on. "I've got my fitness and my strength so I reckon I should do as much as I can for charity… and it helps me keep the pounds off as well.
"I get a great sense of achievement completing each challenge but my biggest satisfaction is handing the cheque over at the end." Last month David saw off a brave challenge from female bodybuilder Janet Ogle, as the two went head-to-head in car pull for the tsunami appeal.
"It didn't matter who won as long as we raised a lot of money for charity because it's a great cause," he said. " For the first 10 metres it was pretty close but then I managed to pull away and won by about eight or ten car loads."
If this summer's exertions weren't enough, David is already planning his next challenge, when he hopes to pull a fire engine from Finaghy to Lisburn.
