How To Use Binaural Beats Meditation For Relaxation By: Trevor Johnson
You may well wonder what binaural beats meditation is all about. In 1839 Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered that if two tones are played with slightly different frequencies and then listened to on a stereo headset, that the listener perceives it as a pulsating beat.
For the sounds to be heard they have to be above 1000 hertz and the two tones should have a variance no greater than 30 hertz. Any greater differentiation will mean that the sounds will be heard individually and will not be perceived as a beat.
These tones have a subtle but measurable influence on the brain and have been known to reduce tension and mental anxiety. The human brain cycles through various frequencies and by using this method the brainwaves can be altered to operate at a particular frequency.
Meditation is a form of relaxation that has been used for centuries in many cultures across the globe. It can be quite difficult to relax the mind, particularly for those raised in a Western culture where people are conditioned from an early age to always be active, productive individuals. Sitting around wasting time has traditionally been frowned upon with such sayings as idle hands are the devils work.
We are so conditioned to be constantly on the move that it can be very difficult to simply quiet the physical self and to relax mentally. To aid this process, binaural beats are found to be extremely effective as they can alter the brainwaves to function at a level that is more indicative to the meditation process.
The alpha state is most conducive to meditation and is easy to achieve thanks to the use of binaural beats. The two different tones or frequencies are played independently, one directed into the left ear, one into the right ear. The brain receives the sounds and creates a third, different tone.
The brain moves from the everyday beta state to alpha. In alpha a person can achieve a heightened state of relaxation and deep thought. Once the alpha state has been mastered the individual can move on to the theta state, which is a deeper level of calm and peacefulness.
The frequency creates a shift in consciousness, making it easier for the mind to achieve a meditative state. The individual can use this induced mental state for relaxation, stress relief and as a way to achieve a more enlightened state. In this state we can focus on issues that require clarification and by therapeutic relaxation we can enjoy many health benefits.
