Surely We Cannot All Be Number 1 On Google... By: Michael Smith
'But, We Can't All Be Number 1 On Google!' I hear this all the time. I always feel that by default, people think the rules are different online but, as I always say, as long as we are dealing with the same human race – the rules are bound to be the same online as they are on the High Street.
What do I mean by this?
Before I explain, let me tell you what happened in Australia in a city where my former employers operated in.
Our company was approached by a big Australian telecoms company that was trying to win over customers from their main competitor in the area. We contracted with them and a few months later they totally dominated the telecoms industry there to the point that their competitors were really struggling.
What happened next? Well you won't believe this…
Their competitors got wind of what was happening and counter-offered us to do the same for them. With all contractual obligations satisfied with company A, a few months later we started working for company B. Fast forward another few months and we had all their customers back plus more! True story people.
Why am I saying this? Because that's essentially what Google can do and does for your business. You see we are all competing for that coveted top spot on page 1. Do we all get it? Yes we CAN all get it, but at different times. It all comes down to your competition and how you handle them. Just like you are doing right now in your brick and mortar shop on your HIgh Street. One minute you are out-selling your neighbours or competitors and the next they are out-selling you! Does that stop you from shooting for No. 1 in your industry? Heck no! So why should that stop you from going for Google Page 1 No.1? No reason at all. My philosophy is that you are already in business, selling what people want to pay for, have paid for and continue to pay for. In other words people want your products and to find them you just need to put yourself in front of your competition on the High Street. Take this same game-plan to Google and deal with your competition there as well and make sure you get your turn at the top and if you are really smart you can stay there. For as long as you like!
So… Yes Mr X, we CAN ALL be No. 1! When is it your turn and for how long?
