Use these styles in the correct way and you can gain an advantage over the other applicants who are competing against you for a position. You could use any one of a number of resume styles. Chronological and Functional are the two most common styles used and we will look at them both.

Under each position you have held you should write a short description of your duties. This style is clear to read and is good at showing your career development which are its advantages. Your main achievements are not demonstrated and it doesn't draw attention to your other skills which are some of the disadvantages. This can be a really good style if you can demonstrate a continuous progression in your career. Provided you are not moving to a different field of employment, the Chronological Resume style could be the right one for you.

Starting with your skills and main accomplishments, a Functional Skills Resume ends with your job history. With this style, your major achievements are highlighted. It is difficult for a prospective employer to follow your work experience which is its main disadvantage. It would be to your advantage to use the Functional Resume style if you haven't progressed or are looking for a career in an area where you have little or no experience. Should there be a number of gaps in your employment history or if you are continually changing jobs then you would be sensible to consider using this style.

Targeted, Imaginative and Combination are names of other Resume styles.

The presentation of only relevant supporting material is the Targeted style of resume and is totally focused on one specific target or position. A big advantage is that you can prepare a different one for each position you are applying for.

An Imaginative Resume style is similar to a mini-portfolio and would be used when applying for a position in areas like graphic design.

The Combination Resume Style is, as its name implies, a combination of the Functional and Chronological Styles. A number of elements can be combined from the different styles to give you more flexibility. Carefully consider the differences in styles in the light of the position you are applying for as it is a reflection of the way you present your skills and experience. Don't be afraid to adapt the style to suit you and not the other way round.
