Infant constipation is a serious condition if left uncured. If the root causes for the condition are not diagnosed and are not subjected to the right treatment, it can lead to complications. Some of the serious threats of constipation are mentioned in this article.

Hemorrhoids – It is a known fact that infant constipation causes the stool to harden. When the stool hardens, the constant stain on the sphincter muscles caused by straining to have a bowel movement leads to anal fissures. These tears on the skin around the anus result in rectal bleeding. A close observation on the stools of the person suffering constipation reveals the presence of red stains on the stools. Warm tub baths, application of creams, are some of the ways to treat hemorrhoids. When the anal fissure occurs, one will have to undergo a surgery to treat them.

Sometimes the straining causes a condition called as the rectal prolapse. Rectal prolapse is the small amount of intestinal lining that gets pushed out of the anal opening on account of the constant strain on the muscles when the inflicted person tries to discharge the hardened stool. Infant constipation is also known to cause other complications like diarrhea, rectal bleeding, rectal hernia, fecal incontinence, uterine prolapse and uterine hernia.

When the condition becomes severe, then the intestine and the rectum get packed with the hard stool that prevents the normal functioning of the colon. When the colon becomes unable to flush out the stool from the body, it results in fecal impaction. When a person is suffering from fecal impaction, the medical practitioner prescribes the intake of mineral oil to soften the stools before removing them from the body by inserting finger through the anus opening.
