Dementia comes in many forms with Alzheimer's just one of the types but recent interest in the condition has meant whenever dementia is talked about it is Alzheimer's that is thought of. Improving the quality of life for dementia patients seem to be the immediate focus for the medical profession until a cure for the many forms will one day be discovered.

Physicians are currently treating dementia by focusing on the specific effects of the disease as often many of the effects of dementia are irreversible, especially if left untreated. No treatment can actually cure any single effect of dementia, the best that can be hoped for is stopping the problem but in the majority of situations a slow down of the effects is the best that can be achieved.

Additionally, medical treatments for dementia strive to find the cause of the problem which can be a specific disease or a side effect of another disease, but dementia can even be the result of something as simple as incorrect medication or an interaction between two different types of medication. A number of drugs including Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors have been used with some success at treating dementia.

The approval of these types of medication is the responsibility of the Federal Food and Drug Administration and in this instance some success has been found using acetylcholinesterase inhibitors with patients suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia generally. These drugs have a particular function and that is to help slow down the problems caused by the chemical produced by the body to help the brain cells communicate with each other called, acetylcholine; drugs like Exelon, Aricept, Reminyl and Cognex.

Unfortunately, once a patient starts taking these drugs they must continue with them otherwise the condition will become worse but even with the positive effects they have on a dementia patient's health, they still can't stop the progress of the condition; they just slow it down. Another type of medication typically used for the treatment of dementia is the N-methyl D-aspartate blockers which includes the drug Namenda, another Food and Drug Administration approved drug that has shown success in treating those individuals with Alzheimer's.

Another problem experienced by dementia a sufferer is actually created by the body itself; glutamate, which is a chemical that in too great a quantity will actually destroy brain cells, reducing brain activity. Some types of dementia have shown this to be a contributing factor in the condition which these types of drug can help to control.

Perhaps a cure for dementia in its many forms is not that far off as greater understanding and better medication is becoming available all the time so if you have a loved one who suffers with dementia there are treatment options available.
