Your Health Insurance By: Suta Chabok
Although we always hope we won't require them, the health insurance will pay for medical attention from a doctor or hospital and associated expenses that arise from the situation. Health cover includes various types of other insurance which can also be purchased separately such as accident, disability income insurance, medical expense insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment. This gives flexibility and a person can arrange specific types of cover depending on his or her needs.
Many health insurance plans exist and one of the first types used was the fee-for-for service policy where an insurance company will pay a set amount of the medical costs and any amount above this will have to paid directly by the insured party. The problem with this plan is that before it can be started, a single payment known as a deductible has to made, then monthly premiums thereafter; fortunately fee-for-services plans are not that common anymore.
If you subscribe to a health maintenance organizations policy then you will have chosen a doctor to be your first port of call when you need medical help but you must always use this person. The idea behind this is that the insured and doctor will build up a relationship which should be of benefit t both and where the doctor can gain their trust and help to provide preventative advice for good health.
A combination of these two previous ideas is called the preferred provider organization a set of doctors and hospitals within a specified group will look after the needs of the insured and their family. Using this type of system, if the insured uses the medical services of a medical facility or doctor outside of this group then there is a good chance that any expenses will not be paid.
An Exclusive Provider Organization or EPO is a network of individual medical care providers, or groups of medical care providers, who have entered into written agreements with an insurer to provide health insurance to subscribers and with EPO, medical care providers enter a mutually beneficial relationship with an insurer. However for your medical bills to be paid the person or hospital you visit must be part of the network although they may pay for medical expenses under exceptional circumstances.
With so many plans and types of medical cover available you will need t consider your personal requirements carefully and speak to your medical benefits manager at work if you have one. To save time it might be worth speaking with your physician about what type of plan is going to be the most suitable for your situation.
