Wedding Traditions By: Suta Chabok
There are a number of wedding traditions around the world some of which are so old that it is impossible to know exactly how they came about but it is just as normal for new wedding traditions to be created even today. The wedding tradition of wearing a tiara is very old and probably comes from when kinks would wear a ribbon on their head and shoulders, usually white as a sign of their status.
This tradition has actually jumped the sexes so that women now wear what is considered a feminine crown that is shaped like a half moon and can be made with expensive metal and adorned with jewels. Tiaras can be worn either resting on the head directly or on the forehead if it is one of the brides wedding attendants but the bride herself must wear it over the veil.
The majority of wedding dresses will feature a tiara and there is no doubt that a wedding dress without one does not have quite the same impact; many brides will treasure their tiara for the rest of their lives. Some weddings feature the bridesmaids, maid of honor, sometimes even the flower girl, being presented with tiara shaped rings as wedding favors.
One tradition which has changed over the years is that of the wedding party escorting the newlyweds to the place where they will spend their honeymoon. It was then the party's task to try and take the garter from the bride's leg as the prize would be for this person to then wear it like a band around their hat or alternatively to a woman for whose attentions they were after.
The enthusiasm that this wedding tradition produced was often too much and the attempt to remove the garter ended in the bride being undressed so to stop this unseemly behavior, brides tried throwing the garter to the men in the party as soon as she was married.
This was considered a signal for the next male to be betrothed however; the men would generally get too drunk and make attempts at taking the garter themselves. In an attempt to maintain good taste at a dignified occasion the bride then started throwing her bouquet instead. However, although it no longer has the same significance that it once did, tossing the garter to male members of the wedding has returned and many women feel very strongly about wearing the garter once again.
Women who are trying to stick to tradition will wear a blue garter as it is considered a lucky color but many brides like the somewhat more saucy red as their preferred color. Just to keep up with the times it is not uncommon for the bride to allow the groom to remove the garter and then throw it over his shoulder to the male wedding guests. The man who catches the bride's wedding garter is lucky and will be the next bachelor to marry within the next year.
